What are the MDGs? PDF Print E-mail

In September 2000, world leaders came together at the United Nations for the Millennium Summit and committed to fight poverty, hunger, gender inequality, environmental degradation, and HIV/AIDS, while improving access to education, health care and clean water, all by 2015. These commitments are encompassed in the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The Millennium Development Goals

Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty     Goal 2: Universal primary education

Goal 3: Promote gender equality       Goal 4: Reduce child mortality

Goal 5: Improve maternal health       Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS & malaria

Goal 7: Environmental sustainability Goal 8: Global partnership
