What are the MDGs? PDF Print E-mail
In September 2000, world leaders came together at the United Nations for the Millennium Summit.

At the Summit they committed to fight together against poverty hunger, gender inequality, environmental degradation, and HIV/AIDS, while improving access to education, health care and clean water, all by 2015. These commitments are encompassed in the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The Millennium Development Goals

Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger

Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education

Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women

Goal 4: Reduce child mortality

Goal 5: Improve maternal health

Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases

Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability

Goal 8: Develop a global partnership for development

Up to date information on the Millennium Development Goals can be found at the Millennium Campaign website.
