Councils and teachers from across several North London boroughs got together in February to look at how local authorities can better support global learning in schools. The conference, organised by the NLSIN (North London Schools International Network), provoked much discussion, in particular, how global learning is helping to build more cohesive communities.
Several North London councils took part including Barnet council, who presented a Values & Perceptions toolkit. This will be published in the sumemr term and aims to assist schools to integrate global learning into the curriculum and better assess the impact of global learning work. Enfield presented its 'Global Learning for All' strategy, which aims to maximise the impact of international activities and visits through coordinating this work across the borough. this was accepted by the Education & Children's Services Director's Team and will now go to other Directorates. The event clarified the vital role that councils play in supporting their schools to include this important (but often neglected) area of learning in the curriculum. Equally clear were the positive impacts on the local community and the important role that schools can play in bringing the local community together.
