Local Government Minister Rosie Winterton announced last month £3m funding for the new Local Innovation Awards. The funding will enable winning authorities to share their best ideas and practice excellence with other public sector organisations, to improve public services. The launch of the Local Innovation Awards follows the conclusion of the Beacon Scheme, which for over 10 years promoted new approaches to learning & knowledge transfer across a wide range of local government priority themes.
The themes of the Local Innovation Awards this year are: 1 Building economic resilience 2 Keeping children & young people safe in the community 3 Community safety: policing our communities together 4 Taking control of care - empowering adults to control their own care 5 Achieving more through partnerships 6 Tackling challenging community issues using talents across the generations And a special bright ideas category - 7 Encouraging innovation from the front line In addition to the launch of the new awards scheme, work is underway with the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF) to encourage Councils, who have been recognised by the Beacon Scheme, to share their expertise further afield with partners in developing countries. The CLGF Good Practice Scheme, funded by the Department for International Development, provides support to UK councils to share good practice with partners in developing countries. Current themes that are being promoted under the Good Practice Scheme include waste management (India), local economic development (South Africa & Ghana) and strategic planning and service delivery (Jamaica). Partnerships are already underway with a number of local authorities including the Beacon award winning London Borough of Sutton. It's not too late to get involved, for further information on the Good Practice Scheme visit www.clgf.org.uk or contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
