Global Learning for All in Enfield PDF Print E-mail

The London Borough of Enfield, with its diverse local population, is committed to developing its global links. Recently the council have been developing a ‘Global learning for all’ policy which aims to maximise the impact of international activities and visits through coordinating this work across the borough.

Enfield continues to develop its partnerships overseas, recently twinning with Sariyer in Istanbul and Halandri in Athens. The leadership of the Council see the advantages of enhancing global links as part of its Community Cohesion agenda – the main language groups in the borough, apart from English, are Turkish and Greek. To develop this work and to maximise economic well-being, a Tourism and Twinning Officer has been appointed. There is a Council working party which oversees the work and monitors progress. Enfield has also gained Fairtrade status. In addition, the choice of primary languages in Enfield  reflects the mix of languages spoken in the local community.

Within the Education, Children’s Services and Leisure (ECSL) group in the Council there has been a long-standing understanding of how the global dimension and international links can both enhance the curriculum in schools and be a major source of professional development for teachers. Mindful that the borough lacked the resources to fully support schools in embedding the global dimension into the curriculum and in accessing funding to help manage projects, in 1997, together with Barnet Council, Enfield set up the cross-borough North London Schools International Network (NLSIN). This now covers the boroughs of Enfield, Barnet, Haringey, Waltham Forest and Camden and provides practical support and guidance on setting up projects and runs a full training programme (partly funded by the British Council).

The Local Authority and its schools have links with schools in Ghana going back to the Millenium On-the Line project fronted by Jon Snow. Many schools have individual links and the LA has been involved in projects across the borough, for example, setting up a library for the Dzorwulu community based in Bethany Primary School in Accra. Other established links include an Area Link with the Balearic Islands, the Educational Psychology Service link with Sierra Leone, school links through the London-Berlin and the London-Paris partnerships, a Teacher Training arrangement with Central Michigan University and long-standing music links through the Children’s International Voices Choirs of Enfield.

The work is coordinated across the borough through the Enfield Learning across Frontiers group which aims to maximise the outcomes and impact from activities and visits. Recently, Local4Global, the Department for International Development funded engagement in London, has been supporting ECSL in devising a policy. This is now in draft and is called “Global Learning for All”. The next step will be to develop this and get it adopted as a whole Council policy. Enfield is happy to share its work and a copy of the draft can be obtained by emailing: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
