Civilian Experts needed for the UK Government's Stabilisation Unit PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 20 July 2009 14:35

Could you help a nation get back on its feet? Helping countries emerge from violent conflict is the work of the British Government's Stabilisation Unit - it's jointly owned by the Department for International Development, Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Ministry of Defence.

The Stabilisation unit is responsible for recruiting Civil Servants and employees of Local Authorities to join the Civil Service Stabilisation Cadre (CSSC). Whether you are a highly skilled practitioner with expertise on issues such as agricultural reform, education, health, justice and security or a specialist in an area such as election monitoring or statistics, your skills may be needed in a country emerging from conflict.

The Stabilisation Unit is looking for high quality people who have the skills, behaviours and drive to work in hostile environments. You'll need to work effectively as part of a team in demanding environments all over the world, to make a real difference in countries of need.

We need a range of people from Senior Managers who can lead a team, to highly skilled practitioners and excellent administrators. Have a look on the Stabilisation Unit website to see if you have the skills necessary to work in a country emerging from conflict. You might be just the person we are looking for to advise on issues auch as:
  • stabilisation;
  • disarmament, demobilisations and reintegration;
  • economics & finance;
  • governance;
  • infrastructure;
  • political reconciliation;
  • immediate livelihoods;
  • public service: education/health;
  • security and justice;
  • justice and prisons;
  • policing and borders; or
  • military and security

The Stabilisation Unit is a joint unit of the Department for International Development, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Ministry of Defence. Their objective is to support fragile states and countries emerging from conflict to: Prevent or reduce violence; Protect people and key institutions; Promote political processes which lead to greater stability; and Prepare for longer term non-violent politics and development. The Stabilisation Unit relies on military and civilian expertise.

The Civil Service Stabilisation Cadre (CSSC) had put in place a common structure to identify, train, develop and manage Civil Servants and other Public Servants who are deployed to support fragile states and countries emerging from conflict.

For those with skills nececssary to be selected to join the Cadre, it offers an impressive opportunity for staff to gain skills and experiences that will benefit their current employer, while at the same time making a real difference in some very challenging environments. Whilst on the Cadre you stay with your current employer and have the opportunity to apply for special deployments. There is a lot of flexibility about the timing of deployments to suit your personal and professional situation.

Joining the Cadre is no small commitment. You'll be using your skills in difficult and sometimes hostile environments helping to bring about positive change - but your impact could be huge and the job satisfaction immense.

Previous experience of working in hostile environments isn't essential. Behaviours are as important as experience. If you have the necessary skills and behaviours to get on the Cadre you'll be given appropriate training, as well as the opportunity to be seconded to other government departments or posted to multilateral organisations to get the experience that will enable you to perform effectively in the field.
