Seeds of change: new phase in Lancashire-Gulu link |

Connections have existed between the communities of Lancashire and Gulu in Uganda for fifteen years. The two communities are now entering a new phase in their relationship through an exciting project focussed around sustainable development and carbon compensation. The Gulu Carbon Compensation Scheme is a four way partnership between 2 local charities and the 2 councils in Lancashire and Gulu. At its core is the premise that Lancastrians can compensate for some of their carbon emissions by helping those who are already feeling the effects of climate change to better deal with the consequences. |

The Local Government Association (LGA) recently hosted a meeting of local government associations from across the world, which focussed on local government's role in aid effectiveness and improved coordination of local government development activities. United Cities and Local Government (UCLG), the global body representing local government, held its Capacity and Institution Building meeting in London in June this year, which brought together local government representatives active in overseas development work from over 15 different cities, regions and countries. |

Young people from across the world gathered in Leeds this summer for the Breeze International Youth Festival. Now in its thirteenth year, the council-backed festival aims to foster greater international links and understanding through a range of educational, artistic and cultural events. The festival offers Leeds students a high quality international experience in hosting their partner schools from abroad. Visiting schools - from the Czech Republic, South Africa, Poland, USA, China and Sweden - spent the week in schools, working alongside their Leeds counterparts on a variety of projects including art & poetry, sport and citizenship. The evening events programme that included a ceilidh and a UN-style debate, provided an opportunity for Leeds students to interact and make friends with their international guests. |
